OSAT GCC CONDITIONER

Camp Muir Time Trial

Thursday May 23rd

This conditioner is open only to GCC students who have not yet completed their May GCC time trial conditioner and are obviously super cool and want to get it done with the best crew around and KNOW they are ready for it. Students must ascend from Paradise Visitor's Center to Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier in five hours or less in order to proceed in the course.

You MUST be prepared with all gear needed to travel safely to Camp Muir (see below).  The trip to Muir is likely much more difficult than anything you've done if you are new to climbing and conditions on the mountain can change suddenly and without warning.  By now you should be able to carry a 30 pound pack (recommended for training) but there is no weight requirement for this event.

Distance:
8.0 miles, roundtrip
Elevation Gain:
4640 feet
High Point:
10,080 feet
Pace: Steady and sufficient to reach the top in 5 hours (approximately 1 mile, and 1000 vertical feet, per hour)
Meeting Place/Time:

Paradise Parking Lot near the bathrooms / visitor center at the base of the trailhead.
MEET AT 8am CIRCLE UP AT 8:25am
IF YOU'RE NOT EARLY YOU'RE LATE!!

Paradise Rd. E, Ashford, WA 98304

Duration: This is an all day event.  The climb up to Muir will likely take close to the full 5 hours, and the descent around 3 hours depending on conditions.  We will take a break at the top for lunch and a bit of recovery from the climb.  Be prepared to get home late and don't make plans for that evening aside from getting home safely - you will be tired.
Return Time:
Late Evening.
What to Bring:
Required:  10 essentials, gaiters, appropriate clothing for potential weather including snow AND bright sun, 3 - 4 LITERS of WATER and energy snacks, lunch, helmet, ice axe, glacier glasses, ski goggles.  Ballcaps or some sort of sun hat (that won't blow away) will keep you from getting burned from above, a BUFF or some sort of breathable face covering will help prevent you from being burned from below.  The sun on the south side of Rainier is INTENSE and not the place you want to work on your tan. High SPF. And don't forget to put it in your nostrils!

Hiking poles and rain pants for glissading are highly recommended.

Mount Rainier makes it's own weather and Winter conditions will very likely be present, be prepared with proper layers, heavy gloves, puffy, and a good idea to bring goggles for good practice an as a backup to your glacier glasses. The wind can really get ripping at camp and it can really get cold up there.  OR it can be hot AF.

Passes Required:
America the Beautiful or other appropriate National Parks pass. New permit regulations don't go into effect until May 24.

Trailhead Directions:
From the west, drive Highway 706 (National Park Highway) to the Nisqually Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. Follow Paradise Road East approximately 17.5 miles to Paradise.
From the east, take Highway 123 to Stevens Canyon Road (Note that this road is closed in the winter). 19 miles from the turnoff, turn right onto Paradise Road East. Continue two miles to the Paradise Visitors Center.
