This weekday afternoon hike is being scheduled to see if there is interest in this type of activity. This will be at a relaxed, gOSAT/slOSAT pace (I take over 1:30 to get up to the Tiger Meeting). Light day-packs are completely optional.
Planned itinerary is an introduction to roughly 4-5 miles of the nearly 50 miles of trails in Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park. With over 3000 acres (5 square miles), Cougar is the largest unit in the King County park system, nestled between Bellevue, Issaquah, Newcastle and Renton.
This hike will focus on the central portion of the park, beginning at the Sky Country Trailhead at 4:00 PM. We will pass the old Nike missile site, Coal Creek Falls (largest waterfall in the park), and then work our way up to the old clay pit, which has been reclaimed as a huge meadow with a good view of Tiger Mountain to the east, before returning to the trailhead.
If this hike proves just a little bit popular, I will schedule two or three other such hikes in this park to give OSATers a better idea of what it offers as a close-in (even closer than Tiger!) hiking resource.
Directions to Sky Country Trailhead: From I-90: Take Exit 13 and drive south on Lakemont Blvd SE for 2.5 miles. Turn left on SE Cougar Mountain Way and then right on 166th Way SE. Follow 166th to its end (0.7 mi). On the right is the Sky Country Trailhead parking lot.
