It is highly recommended that you have participated successfully in a conditioner on Mount Teneriffe or Mailbox Peak to experience gaining around 4,000 feet in elevation in a single hike.
Please sign up for just one Muir trip at a time, even though it is possible you will have to try more than once to make it.
To pass the time trial, you must make it from Paradise to Camp Muir in 5 hours or less. This is a distance of 4.5 miles with an elevation gain of 4,700 feet.
There is no weight requirement for your pack, but you must bring 10 essentials, plenty of food and water for 10 hours or more of climbing, rain gear, warm clothing, etc.
Ice axe and helmet are required. You won't be able to climb with us without them.
Traction devices are recommended, micro spikes are preferred and what the leaders will be bringing. Crampons are not required, but you may bring/use them if you'd prefer.
You will not need your harness.
PLEASE check your email the week prior to the time trial for updates and whether snowshoes will be needed.
PLEASE COME PREPARED FOR WINTRY, BLIZZARD CONDITIONS. In addition to items listed, a balaclava and a very warm insulating layer (i.e. down) are highly recommended.
BE READY TO HIKE AT 7:00 AM. FROM PARADISE. For most folks in the Seattle area, you need to allow at least three hours to drive there and saddle up so we may start on time.
Please arrange carpools well in advance. Driving back alone after a long exhausting day is not recommended.
This is an all-day event; please do not make evening commitments as return time is uncertain. The group often stops to eat dinner together on the way back to town. Bring warm, dry, clothing for the ride home.
