Camp Muir Time Trial

This conditioner is open only to GCC Students who have not yet completed their May GCC time trial conditioner.  During this time trial, students will need to ascend from Paradise Visitor's Center to Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier in five hours or less.  Students must complete this time trial within the month of May in order to proceed in the course.  There is no weight requirement for this time trial, but you must be prepared with all gear needed to travel safely to Camp Muir (see below).

In order to maximize students' ability to complete their trials, only the instructors leading this time trial and students needing to complete their time trials can join this hike.  Other instructors or OSAT members are not permitted to attend.

Elevation:
4640 ft. gain
High Point:
10,080 ft.
Pace: Steady and sufficient to reach the top in 5 hours (approx 1 mile/1000 ft per hour)
Meeting Place/Time:

We will circle up at 7:30 am at the Paradise Parking Lot, near the bathrooms that are located to the right of the trail entrance

Paradise Rd. E, Ashford, WA 98304

Duration: This is an all day event.  The climb up to Muir will likely take close to the full 5 hours, and the descent around 3 hours depending on conditions.  We will also take a break at the top for lunch and a bit of recovery from the climb.  Be prepared to get home late.
Return Time:
5:00 pm at the Paradise Visitor Center
What to Bring:

Required:  10 essentials, gaiters, spikes, appropriate clothing for potential weather including snow AND bright sun, plenty of water and energy snacks, lunch, helmet, ice axe, glacier goggles.

Optional but recommended: sit pad for resting at camp, hiking poles

Passes Required:
America the Beautiful or other appropriate National Parks pass


Trailhead Directions:  From the west, drive Highway 706 (National Park Highway) to the Nisqually Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. Follow Paradise Road East approximately 17.5 miles to Paradise.

From the east, take Highway 123 to Stevens Canyon Road (Note that this road is closed in the winter). 19 miles from the turnoff, turn right onto Paradise Road East. Continue two miles to the Paradise Visitors Center.
